NFL Week 4 Opening Lines and Match-up Previews: The following lines and previews were posted by the Linemakers at SportingNews.
NFL Week 4: A first look at the opening point spreads and totals for Week 4 of the NFL season. Lines are from William Hill, except where noted by an asterisk, in which case they're from the LVH SuperBook.
Thursday, Sept. 26
49ers (-3.5, 43) at Rams
San Francisco’s season is officially off to a disappointing start, as they dropped their second in row, at home Sunday to Indianapolis. Both losses have been by big margins, and the Niners scored a total of just 10 points in those games. St. Louis is 1-2 as well, and worse for bettors, 0-3 ATS. The Rams were one of the most profitable teams to bet on last season, going 11-5 against the number. The LVH opened San Fran -3 (-120).
Sunday, Sept. 29
Steelers vs. Vikings (in London) – No line as of this posting
Minnesota figured to get in the win column with a home date Sunday against Cleveland. Didn’t happen. Pittsburgh was a short home dog Sunday night against the Bears.
Ravens (-3.5, 42) at Bills
Baltimore ran away from Houston on Sunday and is now 2-1 after back-to-back wins at home. Buffalo fell to 1-2 with a loss at the New York Jets. The LVH opened the Ravens -3 but was up to -3.5 within an hour.
Bengals (-4.5, 42) at Browns
Cincy got a win to hang its hat on Sunday, getting past Green Bay, 34-30, as a 2.5-point home underdog. Cleveland, 1-2 after their win in Minnesota, beat the Bengals as a 1-point home dog last season. By the way, Cincy has New England in Week 5, so consider the “sandwich game” conversation to have begun.
Colts (-9, 43) at Jaguars
Indy follows its big win in San Francisco with a trip to Jacksonville to take on the lowly Jags, who couldn’t get the cash as 19-point dogs in Seattle. Indy opened -8.5 at the LVH.
Seahawks (-3, 44) at Houston
While Super Bowl talk surrounded both of these teams coming into the season, buzz of that magnitude is bound to increase around Seattle but subside when it comes to Houston. Sure, the Texans are 2-1, and there’s really no shame in losing at Baltimore, but they’re probably fortunate to have those two wins , and we’re not exactly seeing “Super Bowl” emanate from this group so far. Nevertheless, there was some early action on Houston, as William Hill went from Seattle -3 to -3 (even), and the LVH moved from -3 (-120) to -3.
Cardinals at Bucs (-2.5, 41)
Tampa Bay is 0-3 and has lost eight of its last nine games dating back to last season. Arizona was run out of the Superdome, 31-7, on Sunday and is 1-2, but at least they’re 2-1 against the number.
Bears at Lions (-3)*
Detroit improved to 2-1 SU and ATS with its first ever-win in Washington. The Lions were a 3-point dog at home in Week 16 against Chicago last season, so this opening number marks quite an adjustment. The Bears won that game, 26-24, but obviously failed to cover
Giants at Chiefs (-4.5, 44.5)
There was some interesting early action in the minutes after the LVH posted opening numbers, as the Giants were bet down to +3.5 immediately, but then Chiefs buyback nudged the number back up to 4. New York’s season is quickly slipping away – they ’re now 0-3 after being thoroughly embarrassed in a 38-0 loss in Carolina Sunday. The Chiefs, on the other hand, are 3-0, and will be on 10 days rest when they greet the Giants.
Jets at Titans (-4.5, 41.5)
It’s at least a little surprising to see both teams at 2-1 heading into this matchup. The LVH opened Tennessee -5, and William Hill pushed its total down to 40.5 shortly after opening.
Cowboys (-1.5, 46) at Chargers
The Chargers may be just 1-2 in the standings, but they’re gotten the cash in all three of their games. But so have the 2-1 Cowboys. The LVH opened Dallas -1.
Redskins (-3) at Raiders*
Washington will be in full desperation mode when they visit northern California next week, as they slipped to 0-3 SU and ATS with a home loss Sunday to Detroit. Oakland (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS) are in Denver Monday night as 15-point dogs.
Eagles at Broncos (-10.5, 59.5)
After opening eyes in Week 1, Philly seems to have all kinds of issues now. Denver rolled through its first two games and has a big spread to cover Monday. If you think this total looks high, you aren’t alone, as William Hill dropped it a point-and-a-half to 58.
Patriots at Falcons (-1)*
While many are questioning a lack of their typical offensive dynamics, New England is 3-0, thank you, and they finally got the cash in Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay. Atlanta let one slip away in Miami and is now 1-2 SU and ATS. At the LVH, the game was adjusted to a pick 'em within an hour after opening.
Monday, Sept. 30
Saints (-5.5, 48) at Dolphins
We get a good one to close out Week 4. Miami is unbeaten through three games and has gotten the cash every time. New Orleans is also 3-0 and has covered two of three.
