The Brighter Side of Sucking

Where's the angry hate mail, the death threats, the sob stories about betting the farm and losing the wife by following our terrible gambling advice this week? Both our fans are so nice.

Maybe they also know the secret that keeps a compulsive gambler going during a slump - when the football gods are dumping torrential rains upon his ATS parade. That's right, it's that tiny, little sliver of sunshine that breaks through the clouds at just the right moment, revealing a Bear-like patch of blue sky or better yet an Arizona +3.5 shaped rainbow so bright it turns the downpour into a soothing, tropical drizzle. And then into a thing of the past.

As Marco likes to say, let's talk about the good stuff. Sure, we're eating crow at 5-10 ATS this week going into a Monday Night game where we confidently chose the home dog, Seattle Seahawks. From the looks of it, with eleven underdogs covering this week, this was the aforementioned W.O.D. (Week of the Dog) we saw coming down the turnpike. I guess our psychic/prognosticating powers need a little fine tuning.

So let's take Marco's advice and ignore the half point loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the end of the Cleveland Browns perfect ATS season, the six points Phillip Rivers earned for my fantasy team, and the Patriots losing (awesome) but covering (booo). Let's ignore the fact that our expert status took a serious hit this week and let's talk about the good stuff.

1. Let's talk about the fact that even a Monday Night loss would only drop us down to 24-24 ATS on the season. Let's talk about Josh Katzowitz at 27-20 ATS who is the only CBSSports "expert" who has a better record than us to date. Let's talk about ESPN NFL Analyst Chris Mortenson at 10-5 SU, the best of their entire panel including Accuscore (8-7 SU, 5-10 ATS), whose results would drop to a paltry 7-8 ATS. Let's just say that relatively we feel like we're still doing just fine.

2. Let's reminisce about our 141-126 ATS 2011 season which saw Marco and I win our football pool four times, including a remarkable 9-2 ATS through the playoffs.

3. Let's rave about the Arizona Cardinals. They're 3-0 in their division, 3-0 ATS, and 3-0 in our hearts. Marco already picked up their defense for his fantasy team and I'm about to do the same. In the same breath let's talk about the Philadelphia Eagles. They might be 2-1, but they're 0-3 ATS and 3-0 in our hearts. We might be seeing a noteworthy pattern here.

4. Let's get mildly excited about Jay Cutler not sucking just enough to keep it interesting and then getting bailed out by Brandon Marshall and his defense. I can't believe I ever routed for that guy. I can't wait for his bye week, so I don't have to think about him at all.

5. Let's breath a sigh of relief that at least the Jets covered, and let's simultaneously pretend to hold our breath because this Sanchez-Tebow thing is about to get interesting. Not.

6. Let's have a dance party to remind us not to overvalue the Chiefs next week against San Diego, but if they're home dogs...

7. Let's throw a creepy, Pirate-themed, Eyes Wide Shut celebration for the Oakland Raiders beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially since I dropped Denarius Moore (11 points) and benched Heyward-Bey (7 points).

8. Let's take a  moment to appreciate Torrey Smith, offer our condolences, and give him a cyber-high-five for taking it to the Patriots in one of the most challenging moments of his young life.

9. Let's brag about the fact although we only picked one of their teams, I had Jamaal Charles and A.J. Green on my 3-0 fantasy team.

10. And finally, let's stop talking about good things, and move on to talking about next week.

STAY TUNED FOR OUR WEEK 4 PICKS ATS. It's gotta be better than this week.

Vinny and Marco
