Well, as the universe likes to remind us with icy cold blasts of losing, every good run needs a full-flegdged, bed-pooping kind of day. "Oh bother," Eeyore might say. First Manu Ginobili misses the spread-covering free throw late in the Spurs six point win (bringing our total to 1-4 ATS in half point games), then Toronto blows the 20+ point lead, wins late, but fails to cover by 1.5, and finally the Trailblazers couldn't make a shot late to force the free throw game and get me the OVER in my personal betting life. Plus they were our top confidence pick. A very, very sad 0-3 ATS to wrap up the month of April, bringing our 2014 NBA Playoff totals to:
Record to Date: 21-18 ATS
Top Confidence Picks: 6-4 ATS
Well, when you hit a bottom you have two choices - keep digging or put down the shovel and bounce. Last night felt like shooting fish in a barrel before the games tipped off, but that's the insidious underground world of sports betting for you. I point here, a stat there, and a completely different result.
Tonight we have some pivotal Game 6's on the board and we have to believe the favorites on the brink of elimination will step up and force Game 7's. Let's see how this shakes out.
Indiana Pacers (-1) over ATLANTA HAWKS: This is an interesting line. The oddsmakers opened it at IND -1.5 and at some books you can find it at a pick 'em even though 56% of the action is on the Pacers. What that tells us is the sharps are on the Hawks - and why wouldn't they be? Throughout the series, Atlanta has looked like the #1 seed while Indiana has floundered in mediocrity. Well, Marco believes the NBA is fixed and has convinced me to be unafraid in backing the Pacers to force a Game 7 and increase overall revenue? Give up the small chalk and enjoy a weekend all-or-nothing game back in INDY.
MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES (+2.5) over Oklahoma City Thunder: I know what I just said, but we have to take the points here. The Grizzlies defense has held OKC to under 40% shooting in four straight games and their defense has really dictated this series. We think OKC might pull out a buzzer beater, but nothing more than that on the road. Take the points and the possible first round exit for the #2 seed.
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (+1.5) over Los Angeles Clippers: In addition to paying 2.5 million, being forced to sell his team, and receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA, Donald Sterling is also being asked to submit a full written and oral report on this book:
Emerging from the shadow of their intolerant, racist owner might have been enough for the Clips to win at home, but the Warriors have pride and one of the best home crowds in the NBA. If they can limit their turnovers and win the points off of turnover battle (2-0 when they do), they should be able to send this game back to L.A. for yet another weekend Game 7. Life will be awesome this weekend.
Top Confidence Pick: We'll take the Warriors (+1.5) at home tonight.
May the Spreads Be With Us All,
Vinny and Marco
