England vs Italy World Cup Picks

NBA Playoff Record: 44-40-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 5-1-1

World Cup: 3-4 Winners and Totals

Well, well, well - they it's not a real NBA Finals series until someone wins on the road, and they say it's not a real FIFA World Cup until someone scores 5 goals on the defending champions. The Miami Heat defeated the Spurs in San Antonio in Game 3 before losing back-to-back home playoff games for the first time in the Big 3 era. For a moment, that was a real NBA playoff series, but now it appears to have morphed into a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile, the Spanish football team started strong against the Netherlands, controlling almost the entire first half en route to what appeared to be a commanding (if that's possible) 1-0 lead. Then the Dutch proceeded to score five - yes FIVE - unanswered goals, taking a strong win into their second game of group play next week. If ever there were a game to change the opinions of narrow-minded Americans it was this one.

Saturday's World Cup Action

Columbia vs Greece: Colombia’s status as a dangerous “dark horse” to win the World Cup has been downgraded to less-likely underdogs since Radamel Falcao got injured, and coach Jose Pekerman really needs his star striker fit for their opener against defensive kings Greece.First up for Colombia will be Greece, which boasts one of the meanest backlines in international soccer. They conceded just four goals and claimed eight clean sheets during their 10 Group G qualifying games. Fernando Santos’ team also notched the joint-fewest group goals – 12 in 10 matches, alongside Croatia – of any of the European countries that qualified, so expect a low-scoring affair in Belo Horizonte.

Predictions: Columbia (-120) to win 1-0; UNDER 2 Goals (-115)

Uraguay vs Costa Rica: The favorites won six and drew two of eight prior meetings between these nations, although only once did they triumph by a margin greater than one goal. However, this Uruguay team will be targeting Group D’s top spot, so expect Suarez and company to sail past a minus-1.5-goal handicap mark, with the on-fire Liverpool forward tipped to add an opening strike to his record-setting haul for his country.

Predictions: UNDER 2.5 Goals (-115)

England vs Italy: The first World Cup 2014 fixture featuring a pair of past winners is set for the Amazon city of Manaus on Saturday night when England takes on Italy. Three competitive clashes between the Three Lions and the Azzurri have served up just a single strike since their third-place playoff at World Cup 1990, which hosts Italy won 2-1. With their last two such meetings ending goalless and only one of the past 13 World Cup opening matches played by either side (1998) produced three or more strikes, the UNDER looks promising.

Predictions: Draw (+210) 0-0 score; UNDER 2 Goals (-115)

Japan vs Ivory Coast: A conveyor belt of attacking talent has rolled off Ivory Coast’s production line over the past decade, and after finally landing in a conquerable World Cup group, Didier Drogba and company should start their journey to the last 16 with a victory over Japan. Though Japan lost at home to Uzbekistan and away to Jordan, none of the nations they met in qualifying contained any players to rival the likes of Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, scorer of 20 Premier League goals this term for the English champions. Former Chelsea forwards Salomon Kalou and Drogba combined to down Senegal in their play-off, providing further evidence of the firepower at coach Sabri Lamouchi’s disposal.

Predictions: Ivory Coast (-125) to win; OVER 2.5 goals (-140)
