USA vs Ghana World Cup Picks - 6/16/14

NBA Playoff Record: 45-41-1 ATS

World Cup: 6-10 Winners and Totals

My introduction to and education in the world of soccer came fast and furious Sunday morning when what appeared to be solid draw between the Swiss and Ecuador heading into the last 20 seconds of stoppage time turned into a 2-1 Switzerland. What happened to being neutral? Assholes. After that, France went and scored a garbage goal late and Bosnia followed suit, turning a potential 3-0 day into our first World Cup O-fer. And last but not least, although the Spurs mercifully ended the Heat dynasty, we had sadly taken the points and the Heat, with the UNDER as our only cash of the day. Monday can't come soon enough to TSZ.

Germany vs Portugal: With an entertaining match surely on the cards, odds of +120 seem extremely generous on over 2.5 goals being scored, in a bet that would have paid out in three of Portugal’s last four and a convincing 35 of Germany’s last 42. Personally, I'm partial to Portugal because I honeymooned there. Meanwhile - or years before that - my first love was a German girl who broke my heart. As a result of said biased conflict, we're staying away from a real prediction and rolling with...

Prediction: OVER 2.5 Goals

Iran vs Nigeria: In the battle of two places I've never thought, "Man I'd sure like to visit..." we'll roll with a low-scoring DRAW

Prediction: UNDER 2.5 goals

Ghana vs United States: The U.S. are slight underdogs in this match-up, and in what should really be a toss-up game we like those odds because - well, we're American, Marco's in town, and we played this game sixteen times on his Nintendo 64 and the U.S. won a convincing 15 of those times. You can't argue with a trend like that.

Prediction: U.S. to win 2-1

Argentina vs Bosnia World Cup Picks - 6/15/14

NBA Playoff Record: 44-40-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 5-1-1

World Cup: 6-7 Winners and Totals

Lots to cover this morning and thanks to my wife's birthday/Father's Day hybrid celebration/four year-old waking up with post-ice cream sundae nightmares/my inability to go back to sleep once the sun has started its ascent towards a full day of international sports entertainment, I'm up at 5 o'clock in the morning California time trying to crank this post out.

Although our soccer picks haven't been stellar at TSZ thus far, we're just getting our bearings three days in and finished Saturday strong with a score-predicted 2-1 victory by the Ivory Coast last night. Although Marco and I do generally offer every game on the schedule for free, as you can see by our NHL playoff record, when we're more selective, we generally fare better. In this spirit, we'll start including our top confidence pick for our World Cup selections.

Our audience has tripled in the last three days, so welcome to TSZ everyone. The ones who have been here since the beginning will tell you that what we lack in accuracy, we try to make up for in entertainment and random Google images.

If you're looking for our NBA Finals pick only, scroll to the bottom, but if you have an eclectic taste in sports like we do, then read on. Now let's get to work. We have a lot to cover.

World Cup Picks

Switzerland vs Ecuador: We don't know enough about soccer to understand why, but this is one of the most highly anticipated match-ups early in this World Cup. Perhaps it's because of Ecuador's home continent advantage. Or perhaps it's the fact that the Swiss easily qualified for the World Cup with seven wins and three draws in ten matches, but are suspect to some because of their competition in said qualifiers. A win by either team in this group could go a long ways towards advancing. And the winner is...well, sorry - neither.

Prediction: DRAW (+215), likely 1-1, but wouldn't be surprised by 0-0.

Get it? It's a tie. A soccer tie. A draw? Right? Okay - next game.

France vs Honduras: Man, remember that French team that dominated on defense and did just enough on offense to win the World Cup? Well, neither does my fifteen year-old nephew - because that was sixteen years ago. The odds say this is going to be a one-sided win by the French, but have Honduras giving them a scare - the French eventually prevailing with a late goal.

Prediction: UNDER 2.5 goals (-150)

Argentina vs Bosnia-Hercegovina: Argentina came into this World Cup as one of the favorites to take home the trophy and this game will do nothing to dispel that. They have one of the best players in history in Lionel Messi, and their offensive prowess will ultimately wear down BH, especially with the absence of one of their solid midfielders who not only shores up their defense but also ignites their offense. How's that for vague plagiarism. It really doesn't matter what we know for this game, the best bets here are Argentina and the OVER.

Prediction: Argentina -1.5 (-104) and the OVER (-125)

Top Confidence Pick: Take Argentina -1.5

NBA Finals

Miami Heat (+6) over SAN ANTONIO SPURS: Everyone knows I'm a Heat Hater, but not even I can turn down six points with the two-time defending NBA Champs and the four time MVP LeBron James. There will be no sharing of the ball initially, and there shouldn't be - but these are seasoned veterans playing with LBJ, and eventually they'll step up just enough to lose this game and the series by three measly points. No way San Antonio wants to see this series extended. They won't have a letdown game, but neither will the Heat.Take the points and the Heat but the Spurs on the money line.

England vs Italy World Cup Picks

NBA Playoff Record: 44-40-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 5-1-1

World Cup: 3-4 Winners and Totals

Well, well, well - they it's not a real NBA Finals series until someone wins on the road, and they say it's not a real FIFA World Cup until someone scores 5 goals on the defending champions. The Miami Heat defeated the Spurs in San Antonio in Game 3 before losing back-to-back home playoff games for the first time in the Big 3 era. For a moment, that was a real NBA playoff series, but now it appears to have morphed into a foregone conclusion.

Meanwhile, the Spanish football team started strong against the Netherlands, controlling almost the entire first half en route to what appeared to be a commanding (if that's possible) 1-0 lead. Then the Dutch proceeded to score five - yes FIVE - unanswered goals, taking a strong win into their second game of group play next week. If ever there were a game to change the opinions of narrow-minded Americans it was this one.

Saturday's World Cup Action

Columbia vs Greece: Colombia’s status as a dangerous “dark horse” to win the World Cup has been downgraded to less-likely underdogs since Radamel Falcao got injured, and coach Jose Pekerman really needs his star striker fit for their opener against defensive kings Greece.First up for Colombia will be Greece, which boasts one of the meanest backlines in international soccer. They conceded just four goals and claimed eight clean sheets during their 10 Group G qualifying games. Fernando Santos’ team also notched the joint-fewest group goals – 12 in 10 matches, alongside Croatia – of any of the European countries that qualified, so expect a low-scoring affair in Belo Horizonte.

Predictions: Columbia (-120) to win 1-0; UNDER 2 Goals (-115)

Uraguay vs Costa Rica: The favorites won six and drew two of eight prior meetings between these nations, although only once did they triumph by a margin greater than one goal. However, this Uruguay team will be targeting Group D’s top spot, so expect Suarez and company to sail past a minus-1.5-goal handicap mark, with the on-fire Liverpool forward tipped to add an opening strike to his record-setting haul for his country.

Predictions: UNDER 2.5 Goals (-115)

England vs Italy: The first World Cup 2014 fixture featuring a pair of past winners is set for the Amazon city of Manaus on Saturday night when England takes on Italy. Three competitive clashes between the Three Lions and the Azzurri have served up just a single strike since their third-place playoff at World Cup 1990, which hosts Italy won 2-1. With their last two such meetings ending goalless and only one of the past 13 World Cup opening matches played by either side (1998) produced three or more strikes, the UNDER looks promising.

Predictions: Draw (+210) 0-0 score; UNDER 2 Goals (-115)

Japan vs Ivory Coast: A conveyor belt of attacking talent has rolled off Ivory Coast’s production line over the past decade, and after finally landing in a conquerable World Cup group, Didier Drogba and company should start their journey to the last 16 with a victory over Japan. Though Japan lost at home to Uzbekistan and away to Jordan, none of the nations they met in qualifying contained any players to rival the likes of Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, scorer of 20 Premier League goals this term for the English champions. Former Chelsea forwards Salomon Kalou and Drogba combined to down Senegal in their play-off, providing further evidence of the firepower at coach Sabri Lamouchi’s disposal.

Predictions: Ivory Coast (-125) to win; OVER 2.5 goals (-140)

Spain vs Netherlands World Cup Pick

NBA Playoff Record: 44-40-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 4-1-1

World Cup: 1-0

Don't forget to check out our friends at 1Vice. They have terrific sign-up bonuses, great customer service, and extremely competitive lines. The World Cup has finally arrived, and although I'm not your year-round, international league-following, jersey-wearing, beer-drinking, flag-waving, almost killed weekly in a post-game riot soccer fan, I get fired up like everyone else every four years to dust off the old Nintendo 64, strap on my joy stick, and play along with the biggest superstars in the world. Not that I can name any of them, but if you quiz me on the 2006 Portuguese squad that Marco and I took to the Finals six times in one weekend, I will blow your mind.

In the opening game of this year's cup, Brazil struggled mightily at home and was then was rescued by two men: Neymar, who scored two goals, and Japanese official Yuichi Nishimura, who called a very soft penalty in the box that infuriated the Croatian coach. Ultimately, after falling down by a goal ten minutes in, Brazil eventually coasted to a 3-1 victory. Both squads looked a little tentative in this one, but when you only get a couple of chances in your career to play in an event, there are bound to be some nerves.

World Cup Picks Day 2

Mexico vs Cameroon: According to Accuscore, there is a high probability (35%) that this game ends in a draw. Although both of these countries bleed their national soccer colors, neither has enjoyed much World Cup success. That being said, in a group that includes Brazil and Croatia, this game is considered both teams best chance at earning points. Although Marco and I both love Mexican food, we're rolling with the computers over our palate in this one.

Prediction: Draw (+210) - Mexico 0-0 Cameroon

Prediction: Under 2 Goals (-105)

Spain vs Netherlands: In this highly anticipated group play match, the defending World Cup champions take on the dangerous(ly orange) Netherlands club. Although my mother lived in Holland until she passed away six years ago, I more often used Amsterdam as a starting off and finishing point for my much more enjoyable stays in southern and northern Europe. Although the nostalgic memories of hot, Spanish women and sweaty Ibizan night clubs are mighty powerful, the sentiment of a lost parent is just enough for us to roll with the draw. We're also pretty caught up in the novelty of picking a draw.

Prediction: Draw Spain 0 - 0 Netherlands

Prediction: Under 2 Goals (-115)

Chile vs Australia: I once dated a half-Chilean girl who constantly reminded me that I would never really understand her because of her second-world roots. She was born and raised in Marin County (top ten richest in the U.S.) mind you and her Chilean father was like royalty back in the homeland, but there was a guilty-for-being-entitled part of her that kept her different enough in her own mind for the relationship to fail. My first instinct is to bet against Chile, but  then I kind of look at Australia like a second-rate England/first-rate America, and I can't help but take the close-to-home field advantage.

Prediction: Chile to win (-265)

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals (-120)

NHL; Dating back to last year, Marco and I are on a 12-3-1 NHL roll. The less we know the better, so our soccer picks above should be out - wait for it - standing.

LOS ANGELES KINGS (-170) over New York Rangers: The Rangers found a way to hang on in Game 4 back in New York, but L.A. closes this series out in yet another OT finish.

Brazil vs Croatia World Cup Pick

NBA Playoff Record: 43-40-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 4-1-1

MLB Record: 5-8

WNBA: 3-3 ATS/Totals

No time for a write-up today, but here are our two picks for today's action

World Cup

Brazil 2, Croatia 0

NBA

Spurs/Heat UNDER 197.5: No chance the Heat allow the Spurs to come out the way they did in Game 3. Chances are Miami evens this series and covers the spread, but we'll roll with more defense tonight.

NBA Finals Game 3 Pick: Spurs vs Heat Pick ATS - 6/10/14

NBA Playoff Record: 43-39-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 4-1-1

MLB Record: 4-7

WNBA: 3-3 ATS/Totals

The World Cup is just around the corner, so if you like breath-taking action without much scoring for forty-five minutes at a time, then you're going to love the next month of sports. If you start to miss the unbearable flopping we've been seeing the NBA playoffs, don't worry - soccer players have even better acting teachers.

If you want to try to win $2,000 with 1Vice's World Cup Contest, I guarantee it will make it all even more interesting than a Clayton Kershaw Madison Bumgarner pitching duel. Except for the ties and the lack of serious hatred. Nonetheless, click on the link to the right, follow the directions to enter the contest and find yourself $2,000 richer in July. Join the fun. I might not be doing write-ups, but thanks to our Canadian soccer guru, I'll be posting picks all along the way.

NBA

San Antonio Spurs @ MIAMI HEAT UNDER 198.5: We're staying away from a side here. Chances are Miami gets the straight up win, but the Spurs might make enough adjustments to keep things close. I'd really like to see Eric Spoelstra coach a regular team, because to be honest I watch him waving his hands around on the sideline, saying things through his giant teeth, and I still see Pat Riley puppet more than uber-genius coach. Gregg Popavich, on the other hand - that's serious, sustained success. Go Spurs, but take the UNDER.

"Jazz hands, everyone. Jazz hands."

Stat of the Night

NBA | SAN ANTONIO at MIAMI
Play Under – Road teams where the total is between 190 and 199.5 points well rested team – playing 4 or less games in 10 days, a good team (60% to 75%) playing a team with a winning record
148-90 since 1997. ( 62.2% | 49.0 units )

MLB: Let's get those numbers up a bit

SEATTLE MARINERS (-145) over New York Yankees: It was supposed to be Iwakuma vs Tanaka, but it looks like Nuno's taking the hill for NY and he's  0-2, 6.18 in his last five starts. It's a little pricey, but we'll take it.

St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 (+125) over TAMPA BAY RAYS: The Rays have been awful and Ordizzi has been worse, posting 0-3, 6.16 in his last four starts. We'll roll with Wainwright to shut down the anemic offense while the Cards do enough to win by 2+.

Cleveland Indians @ KANSAS CITY ROYALS Under 8: Kluber has been hot for the Indians, Vargas has been consistent for the Royals, and KC has gone UNDER 5-2-1 in their last 8. We'll take the trend.
