NFL Picks Week 6: Seahawks vs Cowboys ATS - TSZ's Friday Five

2014 Record To Date: 16-9 ATS (64%)

Since Week 3: 11-4 ATS (73%)

Top Confidence Picks Through Week 5: 4-1 ATS (80%)

Picking football is like dating. If you're selective and travel with a wing man, you can generally have some success. If you're a drunken fool and chase every game out there, then chances are you're going to end up losing your juice and walking away dis-eased by the whole experience. Our suggestion: keep your pants on and be patient.

There are good teams out there to date, but if you don't like losing then don't be monogamous. Play the field, ride the hot ones for a while, but don't ignore the losers because eventually they become the best action out there. If a team hasn't been "under the cover(s)" in a while, then both their personal desperation along with the lack of competition (public fade) makes them an attractive pick-up. Most importantly, always use protection (for Visa Card deposits) and remember that "No" means maybe next week.

In TSZ's inaugural season, Marco and I somehow managed to be selective and lucky, nailing our Friday Fives at almost 65% while hitting all the games at a slightly profitable 54%. Last year, however, our totals slid below 50% but our Friday Fives continued to be strong, finishing the year on a 14-5-1 ATS run and destroying in the playoffs 8-3 ATS for the second straight year. Looks like we've picked up right where we left off.

The Spread Zone's Week 6 Friday Five

#5. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (-8) over Dallas Cowboys: America's Team has managed to string together four straight victories heading into a showdown with the defending Super Bowl champs this week. There is no doubt they are a better Cowboys team than we have seen the past couple of seasons, but there is also no greater home field advantage in all of sports than Century Link field. The Seahawks are 16-0 SU/12-4 ATS in their last two seasons worth of home football, covering seven double-digit lines along the way. The eight is being dangled for a publicly backed team, but we see this one getting out of hand early. Lay the TD+.

#4. BUFFALO BILLS (+3) over New England Patriots: Fools us once, shame on you New England. You ruined our perfect Week 5 by ruining the Cincinnati Bengals perfect 2014 record. Unfortunately for you, in order for Tom Brady to be successful you need the running game to be working, and this week you find yourself up against the fourth ranked Buffalo Bills rush defense. If this were an SAT analogy then New England would be to the Bills as Pittsburgh is to the Browns, beating their division rivals 8 of the last 10 meetings while winning multiple division crowns. Buffalo, however, is a cool 5-1 ATS in their last six as a home dog, so while taking the Pats minus a field goal against a division opponent seems like a no-brainer, keep in mind they were 3.5 point favs against Miami in Week 1 when they got blown out by the Dolphins. We think the Bills pull of the upset and claim sole possession of first place in the AFC East.

#3. ATLANTA FALCONS (-2.5) over Chicago Bears: "Like sand through an hour glass, so are the days of our lives." Similarly, like water through a sieve, so is every offense through both the Falcons and the Bears defenses. In a battle between the 23rd and 29th ranked defenses, the OVER 54 is probably the best bet of all. Nonetheless, with the Falcons seemed to have bounced back from a rough 2013 campaign and have returned to their winning ways - inside the Georgia Dome. The Bears, on the other hand, are like the girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead - when they good they're very very good, but when they're bad they're awful. Sometimes, like last week against the Panthers, they're both in the same game which is why they are a paltry 6-15-1 in their last 22 games. We'll lay the small chalk with the Falcons at home.

#2. Pittsburgh Steelers (+1.5) over CLEVELAND BROWNS: Remember what Psychic Granny C said? This is the year of the ambiguous round logo that might be the Pittsburgh Steelers. If she's right, then they'd better go 4-2 if they intend to win another Super Bowl. Besides, there are way too many reasons to take the Browns here. They're at home, they're coming off an historic comeback over the Titans last week, Brian Hoyer is now 5-2 SU (undefeated ATS) as a starter, and Johnny Manzeil has become a non-story. The points and the Steelers seem way too good to be true, but sometimes the line is like a double agent in a government espionage novel and you just have to trust the guy with more character. Cleveland is prone to digging big holes like last week in Tennessee and Week 1 in Pittsburgh, and with the resurgence of the Steelers running game, that doesn't bode well. Take the points.

#1. Last week we offered our #1 pick for the price of a cup of Joe. Not only that, but we guaranteed the pick. Poetically, the Kansas City Chiefs went to San Francisco and covered against a team that was once ruled by a charismatic champion known as Joe Cool.

This week we have another winner and we have the same offer. If you're on our mailing list, you'll get this pick e-mailed to you, and if you were on our TSZ.com mailing list, shoot us an e-mail and let us know. NBA Playoff Record: 41-39-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 4-1-1

MLB Record: 2-4

NBA

San Antonio Spurs (+3.5) over OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER: We see the Spurs motivated enough by Miami closing out their series to buck the trend of blowouts between them and the Thunder. At the very least, we think we'll finally get a good basketball game from start to finish tonight. This game comes down to adjustments and the lingering doubt in the Thunder's mind that they can win two games and the series. Those doubts will be enough for the Spurs to cover if not win this game. With 66% of the public backing OKC, we'll take the points and the UNDER 207.

NBA Playoff Record: 41-38-1 ATS

NHL Playoff Record: 4-1-1

MLB Record: 2-4

Sorry we missed out on yesterday's games - sometimes life just takes over and says, "No soup for you."

NBA

INDIANA PACERS (+8) over Miami Heat: The Pacers have had early leads in almost every game in this series. Sure the stars aligned and LBJ got into foul trouble which allowed Indiana to force Game 6, but we believe the Pacers can do enough to keep this close into the final minutes. The Heat might win, but it will be by 5 or 6 not 9 or 10. The OVER has value only because of the late free-throws you'll see in elimination games like this one. Here's hoping we see a Game 7.

NFL Picks Week 6: Packers Ravens Pick ATS, Preview, Prediction

NFL Picks Week 6: Packers Ravens Pick ATS, Preview, Prediction

The Packers are three point favorites on the road against the Baltimore Ravens in this week’s The Spread Zone Early Game of the Week.

By:  MaChez, TSZ Expert

This Sunday, the 2011 Superbowl Champs and their 130-million dollar quarterback travel to take on the 2013 Superbowl Champs and their 120.6 million-dollar quarterback.  Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers will be looking to get two straight wins and above .500 for the first time this season, while Joe Flacco and the Ravens will continue to verify that the losses they suffered in the off-season didn’t hurt them as much as we all would like to think.  This is by far the most exciting game of the morning and should be an entertaining shootout in Baltimore.

Green Bay Packers
Similar to the 2012 Packers, the 2013 Packers are starting the season a little bumpy.  Alternating wins and losses, the Packers have yet to establish a rhythm.  After two solid games and a 1-1 record to start the season, they’ve now had two straight shaky games on the way to a 2-2 overall record.  Aaron Rodgers had one of his worst games ever in Week 3 against Cincinnati and followed it up with a pretty average performance against Detroit last week.  The Packers have looked terrible in the red zone and will need to fix that issue quickly.

One crazy reason Rodgers may be off is that he finally doesn’t need to carry the team to its victories and that weight off his shoulders may be tweaking his throwing motion.  The Packers had their first 100-yard rusher in three years earlier this season and are now averaging 141 yards/game (5th in the NFL) and 5.3 yards/carry (2nd).  The D has also improved, holding RBs to 86 yards/game (5th in the NFL) and limiting the Lions to nine points last week.  The pass D looked really good with star-safety Morgan Burnett finally back from injury last week but are now overloaded with injuries at the LB position, including Clay Matthews who could miss a month with a broken thumb.

Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens have been a tough team to figure out.  Week 1 they got blown out by Denver on the road, but six weeks in to the season that doesn’t look as embarrassing as it did at the time.  They also lost on the road to the Bills, but did have a chance in that game at the end despite Flacco throwing five picks.  Last week on the road against Miami they pulled off a 26-23 victory and looked pretty good.

On offense, Flacco and the Ravens are pretty average - #21 in total offense and #14 in points scored.  Torrey Smith has stepped up in the absence of Anquan Boldin and Jacoby Jones for over 100 yds/game while Bernard Pierce is actually the leading rusher, not Ray Rice, with 197 total yards.  On defense they aren’t the scary unit they were last year after losing several of their veterans, but they’re still falling in the middle of the pack at #14 in points and yards allowed.

The Spread
Just like Rodgers beat out Flacco by a bit with his contract, Vegas sees the Packers beating out the Ravens by a bit as three point road favorites with the total at 48.5.

The Ravens basically have two weapons on offense, the run game, and Torrey Smith.  The Packers stout run D will limit Pierce and Rice and Flacco will be forced to throw to Smith a lot.  With Matthews and CB Casey Hayward out, Flacco should be able to move the ball through the air, but it will be tough with the D zeroing in on Smith.

On the other side of the ball, the new Ravens D will have their hands full with a Packers offense that is very comparable in talent to the Broncos team they lost bad to in Week 1 (two better-than-good WRs, one super-talented slot receiver, and a physical-beast TE).  TE Jermichael Finley had two TDs the last time these two teams met and should have another big day against a team that’s allowing TEs to go off this season.

Rodgers hasn’t had a “great” game since Week 2 (four weeks ago) which is an anomaly for one of the game’s most elite passers.  He should have a huge day on Sunday with the Ravens forced to cover all his weapons while also accounting for the Packers’ new run game.  This Packers offense that ranks #3 in total offense, #3 in points, #4 in passing, #5 in rushing, and #1 in run blocking will be too much for Flacco to keep pace with and the Packers will win this game by at least a TD.

PREDICTION:  Green Bay Packers (-3) at BALTIMORE RAVENS
                                OVER 48.5

NFL Picks Week 6: Raiders vs Chiefs Pick ATS - JK's Super Teaser Special

NFL Picks Week 6: JK's Super Teaser Saturday Special

After a tough couple of weeks of fielding phone calls, e-mails, and texts from Manpop, Donnell, Kenny, Chris, and others asking, "JK was that you at The Spread Zone?" Manpop Donnell Kenny Chris so on and so on it is I and I am back to lend my insights to the fellas that I trust the most. You see, the team at SZ are my EF Hutton - when they talk I listen.

Last week the excitement of writing the article got the best of me, and I forgot to mention a few of my personal rules. First of all, I don't do Thursday night games, Sunday night games or Monday night games. I've seen it too often where carrying those games has hurt with big money on the line. Imagine playing a 13 team card and you have 12 games right going into Monday. You spend Sunday night and all day Monday imagining what you're going to spend your winnings on, only to watch San Diego cover against the Houston Texans or the Jets beat the Falcons. For me, that's not an acceptable risk.

If you recall, last time I said there were a few games I would bounce (play both ways). After reviewing all of my cards, I saw I didn't have the Browns on any and I had the Chiefs on a few so I turned in a 10 team and a 7 team with them on and won. I'm simply saying all of this to say put as many irons in the fire as you can afford to. This is not an exact science, and some days it can be tougher than finding out who JK is.

This week I am going with 11 picks total, and I am going to bounce 6 games. First, I am going to play all 1pm games and then another ticket with 1pm and 4pm. MY thinking is that Vegas is trying to get overly attractive with the points to lure you from taking the obvious winner such as the Chiefs, Broncos, and 49ers, so as you see those 3 games I will definitely bounce.

My Picks with the Lines adjusted 10 points

Packers +6 1/2
Vikings +6 1/2
Texans +2 1/2
Jets +9 1/2
Bengals +2 1/2
Seahawks -3 1/2
Raiders +19 1/2
Browns +13 1/2

PM Games
Jaguars +38 1/2
Cardinals +21 1/2
Saints +13 1/2

My Bounce (give points to the other team) Games

Chiefs +1/2
Broncos -18 1/2
49ers -1 1/2
Patriots +6 1/2
Ravens +13 1/2
Bills +17 1/2

Happy Betting, Everyone,

NFL Picks Week 6: Packers Ravens ATS and More with MaChez

The Oklahoma Sooners are 13 point favorites against Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns in the annual Red River Rivalry game.

By: MaChez, TSZ Expert

My betting addiction really took a surprising turn this week.  It started off well - 9-1-1 on Saturday - which should have been a metaphorical warning sign for the Sunday to come.  Two teasers, several NFL picks, and a bunch of prop bets later those profits were gone.  Sure MaChez Says went 3-2, and my family pool finally had a winning weekend at 3-2, but breaking even personally wasn’t satisfying enough.

What happened next I never could have seen coming.  What I once joked about in this column quickly became reality and before I knew it was spinning out of control.  I bet on the WNBA.

It first came in a ten-team teaser on Sunday when I figured I could sneak it under the radar.  Then came Tuesday’s Game 2 when I took Vinny’s recommendation of the Lynx, bet the Under, and caught myself anxiously waiting for GameTracker to refresh every 30 seconds for the last five minutes of the game.  When those two hit I was hooked.  Game 3 came yesterday and along with two bets and three teasers that included the game, not only did I actually watch it during football commercials, but I was texting Vinny live updates as he was stuck at Game 5 game between the A‘s and Tigers.

It’s official.  Vinny converted me.  I’m now a WNBA handicapper and I‘m not afraid to admit it.  Those Minnesota Lynx helped me win over $150 (in monopoly money, of course) and the I’m only thing I’m disappointed in myself for is that I didn’t find this cash cow earlier.

Here’s what I’m liking this weekend:

1.  Oklahoma (-13) at Texas
The 108th Red River Rivalry.  Bob Stoops vs. Mack Brown.  Oklahoma vs. Texas.  9th ranked D vs. 108th ranked D.  Blake Bell vs. backup Case McCoy.  Oklahoma has won the last two matchups 63-21 and 55-17 and averaged a 30 point margin of victory over the last three years.

2.  Green Bay (-3) at Baltimore Ravens
Aaron Rodgers had one of his worst games ever in Week 3 and then followed it up with a pretty average performance in Week 5, minus a really long pass to James Jones.  Rodgers doesn’t play this averagely for three straight weeks.  Expect him to go off and the Packers to easily cover.

3.  Texas A&M (-6) at Ole Miss
Some people are picking this game as an upset with Texas A&M’s terrible D and Ole Miss’ needing of a win after two straight losses.  Maybe if it was more than a TD this would be more enticing, but Ole Miss hasn’t looked great the last two weeks, especially when they didn’t manage to score a single point against Alabama.  A week of rest and relaxation for A&M while Ole Miss played Auburn and Alabama will help Manziel and the Aggies easily cover.

4.  Kentucky (-28) vs. Alabama
Although Kentucky is a 1-4 team they’ve had to play #8 Louisville, #17 Florida, and #14 South Carolina and only lost by 14, 17, and 7, respectively.  Alabama on the other hand has only won by more than 25 once and in their one road game this season (against A&M, they only won by 7).

5.  New Orleans Saints (+2.5) at New England Patriots
The Saints are a much better team talent wise than the Patriots and should win this game easily.  New England performed terribly against Cincinnati and although being at home and an underrated D will help the Patriots, it won’t be enough to beat the Saints.

Season Record to Date: 13 - 12
